Fall 2007 RV TRIP

HUALAPAI MOUNTAIN RESORT

November 1, 2007

This was an interesting day.  It started with a trip to the top of Hualapai Mountain (7000 feet though we are at 4200 at the camp ground) to a rustic resort and restaurant.  It's a totally charming mountain retreat complete with elk that come to lunch with you.  We also saw a group of young mule deer grazing near the road.  We've been in the desert for a long time and on top of the mountain there were pinion pines, white fir, ponderosa, Douglas fir, and aspens--trees that were all above our heads and like a real forest.  It felt s-o-o-o good.

After we got back to the RV park we happened to look out the window at I-40 to see a pickup truck go by fully engulfed in flames.  (See the surprise I-40 photo following the idyllic photo of Karen and the president of her fan club this morning.)

The afternoon entertainment was colorful.  Click on the photo to see the driver running away from the grass that had just exploded behind the truck.  Thank goodness the grass and a shrub didn't burn long.

We stopped for a night at Lake Havasu, a good size lake where had a picnic.  The speed boats on the lake were very loud.  Drove over the "London Bridge" which has a beautiful park on the inlet and is surrounded by English-type house and businesses.  Lake Havasu is growing...in a very noisy way.

Today we checked into the Desert Gold RV Resort for the month of November.  We stayed here for a night or two last year and liked the place.  It's a very quiet area north of I-10 about 10 miles.

The space they put us in was next door to a yard filled with gee-gaws and one of them was a six foot artificial palm tree with lots of green and red lights.  The folks with the tree decided they wanted to leave it where had been before we checked in since it was technically on their lot.  The tree was 3 inches from our living room window so we spent two nights with a garish red/green glow in the trailer.  On Monday morning we requested a different space and are happy in the new location.

We drove to Salome, AZ for grocery shopping.  It's a very small town 25 miles from here but the store had all the basics we needed.

There are some nice walking trails here.  This photo is from a trail we like to walk in the morning on a ridge just above the RV park.  The picture just shows 1/2 of the park.  The big building is the office, recreation center, library, arts & crafts, pool area, post office, etc. Other than this park and another on on the other side of Highway 60, a grocery store and a cafe, there's nothing here.  It's quiet at night and now that there's no fake palm tree light next to us it's dark enough for good star gazing.

Today we shot some pool and guess who won all five games.  Went to the pool and hot tub this evening--nice.  Karen gets revenge at scrabble though.

We have a wildlife story this morning.  We like to walk in the morning on the ridge above the RV park.  There's a great view for miles in all directions up there.  This morning I saw a couple of people below us starting up the opposite end of the trail from the end where we started.  About two minutes after they started up the trail, three Bighorn Sheep came trotting across the rocks from that direction to within a hundred yards of us.  They were below us so didn't even know we were there.  They wandered around below us for a while then moved toward standing water that was down-wind from us.  At that time they smelled us, turned back the way they came and went galloping off.  All three had large horns.  I've never seen a Bighorn in the wild before and don't know if they were male or female but what a great way to start the day!  Unfortunately I didn't have the camera along this morning.  Could have taken some nice photos.  I had it with me two mornings ago and will not go there without it in the future.

Today we walked up a taller mountain and saw more sheep sign but no sheep.  These pictures are from the trail on the way up the hill and of the RV park from the higher elevation.

Today will be our last day in Brenda.  Tomorrow we'll move to Palm Springs.  The past month here has been slow and easy with lots of sunshine.  Yesterday it rained for the first time in several months.  Today is clear but very windy so we decided to stay here an extra day instead of fighting the wind and dust on the road.

We attended our last Saturday afternoon Country Western jam session today.  Many of the amateur acts at the sessions are very good and some are pretty bad but they are always upbeat and fun.

New Christmas decorations are appearing daily and some are quite elaborate.
