Twin Falls, Idaho

Broken clouds and intermittent drizzle greeted us this morning for the trip to the Juneau airport. The flight to Boise was on schedule. Bruce met us at the Boise airport and all the bags even came along with us. Bruce fixed us a delicious dinner and Sage and Mandy (the dogs) kept us entertained. Marianne had to spend the night with the grandchildren at their home.

Today was spent cleaning the trailer inside and out, washing the truck, and shopping for groceries. We stopped at a farmers' market to get fresh corn and potatoes. (We are in Idaho after all.) Bruce grilled T-bone steaks and we had a yummy dinner. Night time temps are in the 40's so the furnace has been tested and working.

Woke up to the sound of rain on the roof this morning. That's something that hasn't happened much in this part of the country lately. They needed it but it made the trailer hookup process a little muddy. So much for washing everything yesterday. We had time to visit with Maryanne before she left for work. The rain stopped as we headed for Twin Falls where we parked at around 2:30 PM. We had just enough time to go to the College of Southern Idaho and visit the Herrett Center for arts and science . The Center was started by an uncle of Carol Barrill, a friend of Karen's in Juneau. They had a very good art exhibit and interesting historical exhibits.
For the second time this year we had dinner at the Twin Falls Outback Steakhouse. We recommend the "Treasure Valley Soft Red Wine."

This morning we were almost set to leave the RV park when the slide-out room refused to slide-in. We called Magic Valley Mobile RV Repair and Jeff Fink showed up soon to save the day. He fixed the problem and also gave Garrey a mini-course on trouble-shooting and repairing minor slide-out problems.
Our arrival in Idaho Falls was a long, inadvertent tour of the city as we looked for a free campground we had read about in one of the books we have. It turned out that the free RV park is no longer there so we went to the campground on the Snake River. The trailer was set up by 5:00 PM. Not bad considering the delays.

Fall colors on the way to Jackson, Wyoming were spectacular. Bright red and gold painted the mountain sides along the Snake River. Garrey fixed a delicious tilapia dish for dinner. Garrey's brother, Randy, decided a long weekend vacation in the mountains would be a good break from Florida's hot weather and arrived tonight to spend a few days with us.

We drove north from Jackson to see the Tetons this morning. We had no real plan and the day was full of fun as a result. On the way through the park we saw two moose feeding on the Snake River. Garrey took this picture of his favorite truck, and Randy, with the Grand Tetons. We opted to take the boat across Jenny Lake to make the walk "easier" to Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point. It was all up hill to the 7300 foot level and not easy at all, though it was only .9 of a mile. It might have been the diminished oxygen.

We didn't quite make it to the top but Randy being a few years younger climbed the last hill hanging on to the edge of a cliff. There were inspiration points at many outcroppings to the top, so we waited for him . He said at the top the footing was quite precarious so there wasn't much chance to get inspired up there. A hiker encouraged Karen to climb at least a little further to the yellow aspens so she could take this picture. Garrey had stopped there also. We took the boat back, too. |
|
We stopped at Hidden Falls on the way up. A very beautiful and restful spot where another hiker took this picture of Karen, Garrey, and Randy. |
| We stopped in Jackson on the way back to have lunch and visit the town square. We ate at the Cowboy Bar with the famous million dollar bar. At the bar you seat yourself on a saddle as shown in the picture of Karen while Randy ordered our meal. It is decorated with cowboy memorabilia, lovely western paintings, and animal trophies. We had wonderful elk and buffalo hamburgers. | |
|
Afterwards we posed by the elk antler arches that are at the four corners of the park. Randy called his two sons on the east coast to look at the website of the square so they could see us standing there waving and carrying on. And, of course, Garrey had to take a picture of those characters though they look sedate in the picture. We enjoyed visiting some of the shops downtown. After which Randy and Garrey went to use the hot tub. So it was a busy, fun day. |
